The measures enforced by the Taliban in January further institutionalize violence and control over women and girls, embedding abuse into law and stripping Afghan women of legal protection, mobility, healthcare access, education, and economic participation. Framing wives as “property” and minimizing punishment for domestic violence marks a grave violation of international human rights norms. UN warnings highlight that these policies are not only oppressive but life-threatening, with severe consequences for maternal health, child welfare, and long-term societal stability. Women’s equality is not optional—it is foundational to peace, development, and human dignity.
