In 1969, Tu Youyou studied a 1,600-year-old Chinese medical text to find a way to fight malaria.
She realized that the herb sweet wormwood had to be soaked in cold water, not boiled, to keep its healing power.
To prove the new medicine was safe, she bravely tested it on herself first.
