n 1909, a thriving Greek immigrant community in Omaha, Nebraska was completely destroyed in a single night. 3,000 Greeks lived there — with 32 businesses, a church, and a school. One year later, only 59 remained.
It started when a Greek immigrant taking English lessons was arrested on a false accusation. During the arrest, a police officer was killed. But the city didn’t want justice for one man — they wanted revenge on an entire community.
A mob of 3,000 descended on Greek Town. They looted. They burned. They beat anyone who looked Greek. The police? They refused to help.
The Greeks were given 24 hours to leave or face the mob again. By morning, they were gone — fled to Iowa, Utah, anywhere but Omaha.
No one was ever convicted. But years later, the U.S. government quietly paid $40,000 to Greece — an admission of what happened.
This is one of the largest anti-immigrant riots in American history. And almost no one knows about it.
